We have a huge problem. It is NATO and our reliance on its policy of US based and inspired nuclear deterrence. The US, or at least the US administration, has said it sees Canada as a security risk, at least in the context of the current tariff tussle and the NAFTA negotiations. The Prime minister declares this to be absurd, an insult, and it is. However this is not really the problem. As a person who is the inheritor of a 350 year old tradition of watching the mindlessness tragedy of war, and refusing all weapons of war, I can say that it is the US that is the security risk to me and to every one of us. It is the US that has the nuclear weapons, that has the massive military power to kill all of us and much of life on this earth. Not that I fear a direct attack by the US on Canada but I know, as many scientists, retired generals and millions of ordinary people know, that any use of nuclear weapons would be a disaster for everyone. Should any nuclear exchange occur between the US ands Russia, Canadians are likely to be the first to go, simply because of our geography.
